Stands for retention / Decompression, a codec can be specific computer system or an algorithm that reduces the amount of bytes taken by large files. Codec are combined with movies spread on the internet and codec allow what would be considered a large movie report to be smaller.
 

People acquainted with MP3 audio recordings may think whilst the MP3 of movies of a Flash or XviD codec. An audio codec converts analog audio signals into digital signals for transmission or encodes them for storage.
 

A receiving device converts the digital signals back to analog form using an audio decoder for playback. An example of this are the codecs used in the sound cards of personal computers. A video codec accomplishes the same task for video signals.
