Stands for “Internet Message Access Protocol”, IMAP was initially produced by Mark Crispin while at Stanford University in 1986 and it is a protocol which allows people to get email, but nonetheless uses SMTP for sending email messages.

IMAP4 is the newest version of IMAP that’s much like POP3 supports extra functions not present in POP3.
