The kernel is the first segment of the operating system, when referring to a computer operating system. The computer kernel can cause such matters as disk drive management; interrupt handler, files management, memory management, and process management.

The kernel provides the most basic “low-level” services, such as the hardware-software interaction and memory management.

The more efficient the kernel is, the more efficiently the operating system will run.
