Stands for “Lightweight Directory Access Protocol”, LDAP is an Internet protocol that runs over TCP designed at the University of Michigan and based on X.500 that e-mail programs use to look up contact information.

It is also an open protocol, which way directories can be stored on any kind of machine (i.e. Windows 2000, Red Hat Linux, and Mac OS X).
